Heat pump rebates in Canada
63 current programs across Canada pay for heat pumps, in 10 provinces and territories, plus the federal National Heat Pump Rebate once it opens. For an air-source heat pump, homeowners can stack the most in Yukon ($25,500), Québec ($14,000) and Newfoundland and Labrador ($9,000) today. Pick your province for the rates that fit your home.
Heat pumps get the largest home energy rebates in Canada. Federal, provincial and utility programs can often be combined, but most require an eligible model and some require pre-approval or a registered contractor. Pick your province to see every heat pump offer that applies to your home.

Heat pump rebates: the most you can get, by province
Program maximums you could stack for an air-source heat pump if you qualify for each, from programs open today. Loans and city-only programs are not added. The federal National Heat Pump Rebate ($2,000) isn’t open yet, so it isn’t included.
Ground-source systems and income-qualified households can get more; see each province.
How to claim heat pump rebates without losing one
Most lost rebates come from doing things in the wrong order. The same seven steps work in every province:
- List every program that applies to your address. Our rebate finder does this in about a minute, including city programs.
- Check for pre-approval or registration. B.C.’s Energy Savings Program issues a code that is valid for three months; Nova Scotia’s Moderate Income Rebate needs written approval before you start.
- Book any required assessment first. Assessment-based programs only pay for work done after the first EnerGuide evaluation.
- Hire an installer the program accepts. In Ontario the program-qualified contractor submits the heat pump application; in B.C. it must be a Home Performance Contractor Network member.
- Confirm the model and the sizing. Get the model numbers in writing and ask for a heat load calculation. Check the model against each program’s product list (below).
- Keep everything. Invoices, proof of payment, nameplate photos and any contractor forms.
- Claim inside each window. LogisVert gives you 9 months after installation; B.C.’s Home Renovation Rebate gives six months from the invoice date.
Which heat pump rebates stack, and which exclude each other
Stacking is normal in Canada, but every province has at least one rule that stops two programs paying for the same equipment. Examples from the official program terms:
- Ontario: rebates from Enbridge, Save on Energy or the Ontario government can’t be stacked on the same heat pump, and incentives from all sources can’t exceed 100% of the cost. City loans such as Toronto’s HELP can generally be combined.
- British Columbia: you can’t claim the Home Renovation Rebate and the income-qualified Energy Savings Program for the same upgrade.
- Nova Scotia: an upgrade rebated under the Home Energy Assessment program can’t also be covered by HomeWarming, but the Moderate Income Rebate is designed to sit on top of it.
- Federal: the National Heat Pump Rebate ($2,000, or up to $10,000 below the median income) is described as stackable with provincial programs, but it isn’t open yet and its rules aren’t final.
Worked examples are in can you stack heat pump rebates?, and the timing question in should you install now or wait for the federal rebate?
Eligible models: which product list applies?
Nearly every rebate ties eligibility to a list of approved models, and the lists aren’t the same. Ask your installer to confirm the exact outdoor and indoor model numbers against the list for each program you plan to claim. Most programs want a cold-climate air-source heat pump.
| Program | Product rule |
|---|---|
| Home Renovation Savings (ON) | Cold-climate model on NRCan’s qualified product list |
| LogisVert (QC) | ENERGY STAR certified, on Hydro-Québec’s eligible list, outdoor unit at least 12,000 BTU/h |
| Home Renovation Rebate (BC) | New equipment on the utility’s eligible product list; whole-home systems need a heat load calculation |
| Home Energy Assessment (NS) | On Efficiency Nova Scotia’s heat pump list, installed by a certified refrigeration mechanic |
| National Heat Pump Rebate (not open yet) | On the federal Eligible Products List, which the government says covers more than 100,000 models |

Before you get heat pump quotes
General advice. Each program’s own rules come first.
- Ask for a cold-climate model
- Most Canadian rebates require a cold-climate air-source heat pump on NRCan's qualified product list. Ask each installer for the exact outdoor and indoor model numbers so you can check them.
- Insist on a heat-loss calculation
- Proper sizing comes from a room-by-room heat-loss calculation, not the size of your old furnace. An oversized unit cycles more and costs more; an undersized one leans on backup heat.
- Get pre-approval or an assessment first
- Some programs require pre-approval, a registered contractor or an energy assessment before any work starts. Doing things out of order is the most common reason rebates are refused.
- Plan the backup
- Decide with your installer whether you keep a furnace as backup (a hybrid system) or go fully electric. The choice can change which rebate tier you qualify for.
