Heat pump rebates in Ontario
In Ontario, the Home Renovation Savings Program (HRSP) pays up to $2,000 for a cold-climate air-source heat pump if your home is heated by natural gas, or up to $7,500 if it’s heated by electricity, oil, propane or wood. The federal National Heat Pump Rebate adds $2,000 (up to $10,000 below the median income) once it opens; there’s no launch date yet.
13 current programs cover heat pumps in Ontario (12 open, 1 announced), from the federal government, the province and 9 city and regional programs. Get pre-approval from HRSP before the installer starts. Checked October 19, 2026.

Before you get heat pump quotes in Ontario
The first tip comes from the program’s own steps. Each program’s rules come first.
- How HRSP works in Ont.
- Go to homerenovationsavings.ca and choose the with-assessment or without-assessment path. Heat pumps and attic insulation: confirm eligibility online and hire a participating contractor, who submits the application. Heat pumps need pre-approval before installation.
- Ask for a cold-climate model
- Most Canadian rebates require a cold-climate air-source heat pump on NRCan's qualified product list. Ask each installer for the exact outdoor and indoor model numbers so you can check them.
- Insist on a heat-loss calculation
- Proper sizing comes from a room-by-room heat-loss calculation, not the size of your old furnace. An oversized unit cycles more and costs more; an undersized one leans on backup heat.
- Plan the backup
- Decide with your installer whether you keep a furnace as backup (a hybrid system) or go fully electric. The choice can change which rebate tier you qualify for.
