How it works

Better Homes Peterborough helps city homeowners and landlords plan and pay for energy retrofits such as air sealing, insulation, windows, doors, heat pumps and solar. You can finance the work with a City local improvement charge loan of $10,000 to $50,000 at 4.50% fixed over 15 years, repaid on your tax bill, or with a five-year Kawartha Credit Union loan of up to $50,000 at a variable rate (4.95% for those who qualify). Non-energy work can be financed up to 30% of the cost of the energy upgrades.

Projects need pre- and post-retrofit EnerGuide assessments. To be approved, a project must include air sealing (where the home is leaky) plus a whole-home cold-climate heat pump, a solar system, or a set of upgrades that cuts energy use or emissions by at least 25%. Performance incentives, applied as a discount on the loan, reward bigger savings, and the program also offers a $600 assessment rebate, a $250 air-sealing rebate and a free electrical panel load assessment. Energy coaching is included.
