Solar panel rebates in Canada

25 current programs across Canada pay for solar panels, in 9 provinces and territories including 1 federal program. Homeowners can stack the most in Nunavut ($35,000), the Northwest Territories ($20,000) and Ontario ($5,000) today. Pick your province for the rates that fit your home.

Solar incentives in Canada are a patchwork: some provinces offer rebates, others rely on net metering rules or municipal financing, and the federal grant for solar has ended. We show what's open in your province and how payback changes with local electricity rates.

Solar panel rebates: the most you can get, by province

Program maximums you could stack if you qualify for each, from programs open today. Loans and city-only programs are not added.

Income-qualified households can get more; see each province.

What a 6 kW system would get

Solar rebates are calculated differently, so the same system lands differently in each province. Here is the arithmetic for a 6 kW rooftop system, using each program’s published formula.

Rebate on a 6 kW rooftop solar system, by program formula
ProgramFormula6 kW system
Home Renovation Savings (ON)$1,000 per kW, up to $5,000$5,000 (cap)
BC Hydro (BC)$1,000 per kW, up to 50% of cost, max $5,000$5,000 (cap)
LogisVert Solar (QC)$1,000 per kW, up to 40% of eligible cost$6,000 if cost ≥ $15,000
Efficiency Manitoba (MB)$0.50 per watt, up to $5,000$3,000
AEA Renewable Energy (NT)Up to $20,000; solar capped at $4 per wattUp to $20,000, pre-approval needed

Recently closed: Nova Scotia’s SolarHomes stopped taking homeowner applications in April 2025, and Edmonton’s solar rebate is fully subscribed. There is no federal solar rebate since the Greener Homes Grant closed.

Net metering: why it matters more than the rebate

Net metering lets you send surplus solar power to the grid and get credit for it. Over a system’s life, those credits can be worth more than any rebate, so check what each rebate does to them:

  • Ontario: the rebate is for load-displacement systems only, and net metering isn’t allowed with it.
  • B.C.: solar rebate recipients must take service under BC Hydro’s new self-generation rate. Existing net-metering customers who take no rebate can stay on net metering for 10 years from their start date.
  • Québec: the system must be grid-connected with Hydro-Québec’s approval, and Hydro-Québec’s net-metering rules apply.

Where there’s no rebate: solar financing

Property-tax and utility loans are the main help where no rebate exists, or to cover the rest of the bill. Loans are repaid, so they’re never part of a stacked rebate total.

How to claim a solar rebate

  1. Check pre-approval. Ontario requires written pre-approval before you buy or install anything; the N.W.T. program requires pre-approval too.
  2. Choose an installer the program accepts. BC Hydro requires a Home Performance Contractor Network member for applications from June 1, 2026; Québec requires the right RBQ licence subclasses.
  3. Apply for grid connection with your utility.
  4. Submit the claim with invoices and proof of connection. LogisVert’s window is 9 months after installation.

Solar rebates in Canada

General advice. Each program’s own rules come first.

Read the metering rules
Some rebates exclude net metering or require load-displacement systems. Check this before you sign, because it changes how the system is designed.
Get pre-approval
Solar rebates often need written pre-approval before you buy or install anything.
Check the roof first
If your roof needs replacing within ten years, do it before the panels go on.

Get up to 3 solar quotes

Tell us where you live and what you’re planning. We’ll send your request to up to 3 installers who know the local rebate paperwork.

We’re independent. We never take rebate applications or charge you to apply; always apply through the official program.

Request quotes

Free, no obligation. We pass your request to up to 3 independent installers who serve your area and, where a program requires it, are registered with it.
