How it works
BC Hydro pays residential customers $1,000 per kW of installed solar, up to $5,000 and no more than half the installed cost. Batteries earn $500 per kWh of storage, also capped at half the cost: up to $1,500 when installed with solar, or up to $5,000 when the battery is enrolled in Peak Saver, BC Hydro's demand-response program. A battery without solar only qualifies if it is enrolled in Peak Saver.
You must submit a self-generation application and receive BC Hydro's technical acceptance before installing, and the system must be designed and installed by a Home Performance Contractor Network member. Solar rebate recipients take service on BC Hydro's self-generation rate (Rate Schedule 2289), which replaced the previous rate on July 1, 2026.
Rebates are paid to the property owner after the system is approved for connection, usually within 60 days. Funding is first-come, first-served.
Who qualifies
- BC Hydro or City of New Westminster residential account; FortisBC customers are not eligible
- You own the individually metered home (rental homes qualify and the rebate goes to the owner)
- Self-generation application accepted by BC Hydro before installation
- Designed and installed by a licensed HPCN member; self-installs not eligible
- Tesla batteries are not eligible
How to apply
Step 1: Get quotes from HPCN-member solar and battery installers
Step 2: Submit a self-generation application through MyHydro and wait for technical acceptance before buying equipment
Step 3: Install the system and, for the higher battery rebate, enrol it in Peak Saver within 14 days of going into service
Step 4: The rebate is processed once the connection is approved
