Short answer

Three programs pay for home batteries. Ontario’s Home Renovation Savings pays up to $5,000, but only with new solar. BC Hydro pays up to $5,000 if the battery is enrolled in Peak Saver, or up to $1,500 with solar but no enrolment. Québec’s Rénoclimat pays up to $4,000 for a fixed battery in a principal residence, no solar required.

Where home battery rebates exist

The table is generated from our database and lists every open provincial or utility rebate that pays for a home battery. For every program in a province, including city loans, see home battery rebates by province.

Ontario: up to $5,000, with new solar only

Home Renovation Savings pays for battery storage installed with a new rooftop solar system and sized for it. Like the solar rebate, it needs written pre-approval before you buy or install anything, and the system must be load displacement only, so net metering isn’t allowed.

Adding a battery to the solar you already have, including a microFIT system, doesn’t qualify. Advocacy groups have asked the province to allow standalone batteries, but no change had been confirmed when we last checked.

B.C.: up to $5,000 with Peak Saver

BC Hydro’s solar and battery rebate pays per kWh of storage. The higher cap needs Peak Saver enrolment, which lets BC Hydro draw on the battery at peak times.

Québec: up to $4,000 through Rénoclimat

Since its redesign on October 1, 2026, Rénoclimat pays for a fixed home battery and for connecting a backup power source, for principal residences and multi-unit buildings. You don’t need solar.

Everywhere else: loans, and the territories

Outside these three provinces, the main help is financing. City and property-tax loans such as Toronto’s HELP or Saskatoon’s HELP can include a battery, but you repay them. In the Northwest Territories, the AEA Renewable Energy program counts batteries as part of an eligible renewable project; replacement batteries don’t qualify.
