How it works

AEA pays the lowest of 50% of eligible costs, a savings-based calculation (for systems other than solar electric) or, for solar electric, $4.00 per watt of capacity. Residents can receive up to $30,000 for biomass heating and up to $20,000 for other projects; most businesses and non-profits can receive up to $50,000.

Eligible technologies include solar PV, wind and micro-hydro, solar water and air heating, and wood pellet and EPA-certified wood boilers and furnaces. Grid-connected renewable electricity is no longer eligible in hydro-powered communities, where residents can use the utility's net metering instead; off-grid projects there still qualify. Batteries are eligible for stand-alone systems and grid-tied systems with battery backup, but not as replacements.

Projects need pre-approval, must be finished within four months of approval, and final paid invoices are due within one month of completion.

Who qualifies

  • NWT resident, business, non-profit or community or Indigenous government
