How it works

The Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program is the federal successor to the Greener Homes Grant for lower-income households. Instead of reimbursing homeowners, it pays for upgrades directly: a partner organization plans and installs the work, and eligible participants pay nothing out of pocket.

For the first time in a federal retrofit program, tenants who pay their own energy bills can take part, not only owners. Typical upgrades include insulation, air sealing and heat pumps, and in some regions windows, doors or smart thermostats. The exact list depends on the provincial partner.

As of October 2026 the program is delivered by BC Hydro and FortisBC in British Columbia, Efficiency Manitoba's Energy Efficiency Assistance Program, Efficiency Nova Scotia's HomeWarming and African Nova Scotian Communities Retrofit programs, Prince Edward Island's home insulation programs, and Hydro-Québec's offers for modest-income households. No territory and no other province has a partner program yet; the federal government says more will be added.

Who qualifies

  • Low- to median-income households (thresholds set by each provincial partner)
  • Homeowners, and tenants who pay their own energy bills
  • Must live in a province with an active delivery partner (currently BC, MB, NS, PE and QC)
  • Indigenous governments and organizations receive funding through separate federal agreements

How to apply

  1. Step 1: Find the partner program for your province on the federal program page

  2. Step 2: Apply directly to that partner (BC Hydro, FortisBC, Efficiency Manitoba, Efficiency Nova Scotia, the PEI home insulation programs or Hydro-Québec)

  3. Step 3: Complete the partner's income verification and home assessment

  4. Step 4: The partner arranges and pays for the installation
