How it works

On October 8, 2026 the federal government announced a $2 billion, eight-year plan to retrofit one million homes. Its main measure for homeowners is the National Heat Pump Rebate, which is expected to fund up to 820,000 electric cold-climate air-source heat pumps.

Eligible homeowners can receive $2,000, and households with income below the median can receive up to $10,000. The government says both amounts can be combined with existing provincial programs.

The rebate is built for speed, especially when a furnace or boiler fails without warning. You apply through an online portal with basic personal details and the heat pump you plan to install, and approval is expected within 24 hours. After the heat pump is bought and installed, you upload your receipts and payment is approved within about five days, by direct deposit. No energy audit is needed before or after the installation, but the heat pump must be on the federal Eligible Products List, which has more than 100,000 models.

The portal is not open yet. The launch date, the median-income cut-off and the detailed eligibility rules have not been published.

Who qualifies

  • Installing an eligible electric cold-climate air-source heat pump
  • The heat pump must be on the federal Eligible Products List
  • The larger rebate is for households below the median income; the income threshold has not been published
  • One rebate per person: a landlord who claims for a heat pump in a rental property they own cannot also claim for their own home
  • Designed for homeowners replacing a heating system that has broken down or is near the end of its life

How to apply

  1. Step 1: Sign up for updates on the federal 'One million home energy retrofits' page

  2. Step 2: Once the portal opens, apply online with your personal details and the heat pump model you plan to install

  3. Step 3: Wait for approval (expected within 24 hours), then buy and install the heat pump

  4. Step 4: Upload your receipts through the portal after installation

  5. Step 5: Receive payment by direct deposit (approval expected within about five days)
