How it works

Solar City lends property owners the cost of a solar system; the municipality pays the contractor once the installation is certified, and the owner repays through a local improvement charge over ten years at a fixed 4.75% rate. There is no credit check, but municipal accounts must be in good standing.

Owners can pay off the balance early without penalty. If the home is sold first, the balance can be paid at closing or passed on to the buyer. Any rebates are claimed by the owner separately and are not deducted from the amount owed.

Residential owners, non-profits, co-ops, charities and places of worship within HRM are eligible. Only roof areas producing at least 70% of an optimal system's output can be financed.

Who qualifies

  • Property within Halifax Regional Municipality boundaries
  • Property taxes and other municipal charges in good standing
  • All legal owners sign the participant agreement
