How it works

Manitoba Hydro lends homeowners money for qualifying energy upgrades and adds the payments to the monthly energy bill. There is no down payment, and Manitoba Hydro pays the contractor or retailer directly. The rate is 6.20% (on approved credit) for the first five years; after that the rate is based on market rates.

Total borrowing is capped at $12,500 per home. Ground source heat pumps and solar PV systems can be financed up to $20,000 over 15 years, and all loans on a home cannot exceed $20,000 combined. Other limits include $10,000 for cold climate air source heat pumps (15 years), $7,500 for natural gas furnaces and boilers (15 years), $7,500 each for insulation, air sealing, windows and doors, water heating, space heating and ventilation (5 years), $5,000 for central air, conventional air source heat pumps, electrical upgrades and radon mitigation, and $3,000 for a Level 2 EV charger.

Applications must be approved before any work starts or materials are bought. Efficiency Manitoba rebates can be combined with the loan.
