How it works

Efficiency Manitoba pays homeowners a rebate based on the area insulated and the R-value added. Rates are $0.03 per square foot per R for open attics, cathedral, sloped or flat roofs and attic kneewalls, $0.06 for wall cavities and for foundation walls and joist headers, and $0.15 for exterior wall insulation added when re-siding. Each area (other than joist headers) must be at least 100 sq ft, start below a set R-value and reach a target R-value; no rebate is paid for insulation beyond the target.

The rebate for each area cannot be more than the cost of the insulation materials, including taxes. An air sealing bonus of up to $1,000 is available when air sealing is done before insulating and measured with pre- and post-retrofit EnerGuide evaluations.

The project must be approved before materials are bought or any work begins, including removing drywall, stucco or old insulation, and the insulation must be installed within 12 months of approval.

Who qualifies

  • Owner of a home, rental or cottage with active Manitoba Hydro residential service, heated for the whole September to May heating season
  • Detached, semi-detached, or mobile/modular home on a permanent foundation with a permanent water supply
  • No previous Efficiency Manitoba rebate for the same area; new materials bought in Canada with verified R-values
  • Not eligible: apartments, garages, porches, three-season rooms, seasonal or unoccupied homes, or projects already started

How to apply

  1. Step 1: Choose an Efficiency Manitoba registered contractor or retailer, who starts the application

  2. Step 2: Book a pre-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation if you want the air sealing bonus

  3. Step 3: After approval, buy materials from the supplier on your application and install within 12 months

  4. Step 4: Your supplier submits completion (a post-installation inspection may be required) and the cheque is mailed to you
