How it works

The Energy Efficiency Assistance Program gives income-qualified households a free home energy assessment and pays registered contractors directly for upgrades, so participants pay nothing upfront. Free measures include attic, wall and basement insulation, an ENERGY STAR smart thermostat, energy-saving products such as LED bulbs and low-flow showerheads, and an air source or ground source heat pump for homes heated by an electric furnace, electric baseboards or an electric boiler.

Other offers include a natural gas furnace upgrade for $9.50 a month (replacing a standard-efficiency furnace) or $25 a month (replacing a mid-efficiency furnace) for five years, a $5,000 rebate for upgrading to a high-efficiency natural gas boiler, and $300 for each ENERGY STAR triple-pane window or door.

Renters can take part through their landlord: the landlord applies and each tenant completes a consent form and provides income documents. Red River Métis Citizens apply through Efficiency Manitoba's Métis Energy Efficiency Offers, and apartment buildings through the In-Suite Energy Efficiency Program.
