Toronto home energy rebates and loans

Toronto homeowners can borrow up to $125,000 for a heat pump and other upgrades through the city’s Home Energy Loan Program (HELP). Most Toronto homes heat with natural gas, so Ontario’s Home Renovation Savings Program pays up to $2,000 for an air-source heat pump (up to $7,500 if you heat with electricity, oil or propane). The federal National Heat Pump Rebate will add $2,000, or up to $10,000 below the median income, once it opens.

Toronto’s older neighbourhoods are full of pre-war brick semis, row houses and detached homes, many of them built long before modern insulation standards. Most homes heat with natural gas, so a heat pump here is usually a fuel switch or a hybrid with the existing furnace.
