Durham Region home energy rebates and loans

Durham Region homeowners can borrow up to $125,000 for a heat pump and other upgrades through the region’s Durham Greener Homes Loan Program. Most Durham Region homes heat with natural gas, so Ontario’s Home Renovation Savings Program pays up to $2,000 for an air-source heat pump (up to $7,500 if you heat with electricity, oil or propane). The federal National Heat Pump Rebate will add $2,000, or up to $10,000 below the median income, once it opens.

Durham Region runs from the lakeshore suburbs of Pickering, Ajax, Whitby and Oshawa to the farms and small towns of Brock, Scugog and Uxbridge. Most urban homes heat with natural gas, while rural homes off the gas line often use propane, oil or electric heat.

How Durham Greener Homes works

Open

Durham Greener Homes is Durham Region's home retrofit hub. In May 2026 the Region launched a low-interest local improvement charge loan of up to $125,000 at 2%, repaid on the property tax bill over a fixed 15-year term. The loan stays with the property if you sell. At least 80% of the loan must go to energy-efficiency work such as insulation, windows and doors, air sealing, heat pumps, electric or heat pump water heaters, solar panels and batteries; up to 20% can go to other eligible items such as flood protection, electrical upgrades, EV chargers and EnerGuide evaluation costs. Properties in the City of Pickering are not eligible for the loan yet.
