How it works

CoolSaver was a Save on Energy local initiative run by the IESO for single-family homes (detached, semi-detached, row houses and townhouses) in targeted postal code areas of Toronto, York Region and Ottawa. Homeowners and tenants could get a free tune-up of a central air conditioner or central heat pump (a $250 value), a $100 discount on a refrigerant top-up during the tune-up, and $1,000 off replacing a central air conditioner rated 14 SEER or lower with one rated 18 SEER or higher. A CoolSaver contractor (Trade Ally) applied the discount on the invoice.

The 2025 program required a signed participant agreement and work order by October 31, 2025 and installation by December 31, 2025. Save on Energy no longer lists CoolSaver, and no 2026 offer has been posted.

Who qualifies

  • 18 or older and living in an eligible postal code area (FSA) of Toronto, York Region or Ottawa.
  • Owner or tenant of a single-family home; tenants needed the owner's signed consent.
  • Home connected to the IESO-controlled grid with a working central air conditioner or central heat pump serving only that home.
  • Equipment being replaced must not have been paid for by an earlier IESO or Government of Ontario incentive.

How applications worked

  1. Step 1: Closed. The last round needed a signed participant agreement and work order by October 31, 2025, with work finished by December 31, 2025.
