Ductless vs ducted heat pump: cost and rebates in Canada

Ducted (central) systems use your existing ducts; ductless (mini-split) systems mount heads on the wall. The rebate often depends on which one you pick.

Short answer

Use ducted if your home already has ducts, and ductless if it doesn't. Rebates often favour ducted, whole-home systems: Efficiency Manitoba pays $2,000 for ducted vs $1,500 for ductless.

Typical ranges before rebates and tax, not quotes. Your price depends on the home, the ductwork and the equipment. Ask for at least two written quotes.

How rebates differ by type

Heat pump rebates by system type
ProgramDuctlessDucted
Efficiency Manitoba Cold Climate Air Source Heat Pump Rebate$1,500$2,000
Total Home Energy Savings Program$400$1,500
Home Energy Assessment Program$300 per ton$500 per ton
Home Renovation Rebate Program$1,500$4,000

Heat pump rebates by system type

Some programs pay by capacity instead of type, so a larger ductless system can get as much as a ducted one: Home Renovation Savings pays per ton and LogisVert pays per 1,000 BTU/h. See heat pump capacity at -8 °C.

Which one should you choose?

  • Ducted if you have a furnace with ducts in good shape: one outdoor unit heats and cools the whole house.
  • Ductless if you heat with baseboards or a boiler, or want to heat one floor first. See heat pump vs baseboards.

Frequently asked questions
