Cold climate vs standard heat pump: do you need one for rebates?

A cold-climate heat pump keeps more of its heating output in deep cold. It costs more, and it is what most rebate programs require.

Short answer

If you want a rebate, you almost always need a cold-climate model: Home Renovation Savings, Efficiency Manitoba and the National Heat Pump Rebate all require one. It costs more: $10,000 to $19,000 (RBC, May 2024) vs about $9,000 (RBC, May 2024) for a standard unit.

What makes a heat pump cold-climate

A cold-climate air-source heat pump is rated to keep delivering a set share of its heating capacity at low temperatures. Programs check this against a list: NRCan's cold-climate list for Home Renovation Savings, ENERGY STAR Cold Climate for LogisVert. Read the glossary entry for the details.

Which programs require it

In our data, Home Renovation Savings, Efficiency Manitoba and the National Heat Pump Rebate pay only for cold-climate air-source models. LogisVert pays both, at different rates: $50 per 1,000 BTU/h at -8°C for a standard ENERGY STAR model and $120 per 1,000 BTU/h at -8°C (advertised up to $6,700) for a cold-climate one.

Which one should you choose?

Choose a cold-climate model if you want a rebate or rely on the heat pump as your main heat. A standard model can make sense only where no rebate applies and you keep a furnace for cold days. Compare dual fuel and all-electric.

Frequently asked questions

For most programs, yes. Home Renovation Savings, Efficiency Manitoba and the National Heat Pump Rebate require one. LogisVert pays a lower rate for standard ENERGY STAR models.

Where a program pays for it, the rebate often covers much of the price gap. Without a rebate, it is worth it mostly if the heat pump will be your main heat in a cold region.
