Heat pump rebates in Nova Scotia

In Nova Scotia, the Home Energy Assessment Program (HEA) pays toward a ductless mini-split heat pump after an energy assessment: $300 per ton, up to $5,000 across all upgrades. The federal National Heat Pump Rebate adds $2,000 (up to $10,000 below the median income) once it opens; there’s no launch date yet.

7 current programs cover heat pumps in Nova Scotia (6 open, 1 announced), from the federal government, the province and Halifax. Book the energy assessment before any work: HEA won’t pay for upgrades done first. Checked October 19, 2026.

Before you get heat pump quotes in Nova Scotia

The first tip comes from the program’s own steps. Each program’s rules come first.

How HEA works in N.S.
If your household may qualify on income, first apply for the Moderate Income Rebate so the assessment fee can be waived. Book an initial assessment with an Efficiency Nova Scotia delivery agent partner ($199 fee unless waived).
Ask for a cold-climate model
Most Canadian rebates require a cold-climate air-source heat pump on NRCan's qualified product list. Ask each installer for the exact outdoor and indoor model numbers so you can check them.
Insist on a heat-loss calculation
Proper sizing comes from a room-by-room heat-loss calculation, not the size of your old furnace. An oversized unit cycles more and costs more; an undersized one leans on backup heat.
Plan the backup
Decide with your installer whether you keep a furnace as backup (a hybrid system) or go fully electric. The choice can change which rebate tier you qualify for.
