Insulation rebates in Nova Scotia

In Nova Scotia, the Home Energy Assessment Program (HEA) pays for insulation: up to $1,500 for above-grade exterior wall insulation. Income-qualified households can get more, up to $2,500, through the Moderate Income Rebate.

6 current programs cover insulation in Nova Scotia, from the federal government, the province and Halifax. Book the energy assessment before any work: HEA won’t pay for upgrades done first. Checked October 19, 2026.

Getting insulation right in Nova Scotia

The first tip comes from the program’s own steps. Each program’s rules come first.

How HEA works in N.S.
If your household may qualify on income, first apply for the Moderate Income Rebate so the assessment fee can be waived. Book an initial assessment with an Efficiency Nova Scotia delivery agent partner ($199 fee unless waived).
Start with the attic
Attics are usually the cheapest place to add insulation and often have the fastest payback.
Seal before you insulate
Air-seal the attic floor, top plates and penetrations first. Insulation slows heat; it doesn't stop air leaks.
Keep the paperwork
Rebates are often based on the area and R-value added. Ask for invoices that list both, and photos before and after.
