The main differences

  • Evaluations: the grant needed EnerGuide evaluations before and after. The new rebate, as announced, needs none.
  • Upgrades: the grant covered many upgrades. The new rebate covers eligible cold-climate air-source heat pumps on the federal Eligible Products List.
  • Timing: the grant paid after the work. The new rebate approves you before you buy, then pays after you upload receipts.
  • Income: the grant wasn't income-tested. The new rebate pays up to $10,000 below the median income; that cut-off isn't published.

What happened to the grant

The federal grant of up to $5,000 for home retrofits (plus up to $600 for EnerGuide evaluations) is fully closed. New applications stopped in February 2024 and the final payment deadline passed on December 31, 2025. Read what replaced it, province by province.

What to do now

Provincial programs are open today and don't need to wait for the federal rebate. Start with your province: for example Ontario, Québec or B.C. Get an email when the federal rebate opens from the National Heat Pump Rebate guide.
