Heat pump rebates in British Columbia

The BC Hydro Air Source Heat Pump Bonus Rebate ends on October 31, 2026. In British Columbia, the Home Renovation Rebate Program (HRR) and the BC Hydro Air Source Heat Pump Bonus Rebate can be combined for heat pumps: up to $5,000 together if you qualify for each. The federal National Heat Pump Rebate adds $2,000 (up to $10,000 below the median income) once it opens; there’s no launch date yet.

19 current programs cover heat pumps in British Columbia (18 open, 1 announced), from the federal government, the province, 4 utilities and 7 city and regional programs. HRR only pays when a licensed contractor does the work. Checked October 19, 2026.

Before you get heat pump quotes in British Columbia

The first tip comes from the program’s own steps. Each program’s rules come first.

How HRR works in B.C.
Check that your home and upgrade qualify on the BC Hydro or FortisBC rebate pages. Get quotes from HPCN contractors and have the work done.
Ask for a cold-climate model
Most Canadian rebates require a cold-climate air-source heat pump on NRCan's qualified product list. Ask each installer for the exact outdoor and indoor model numbers so you can check them.
Insist on a heat-loss calculation
Proper sizing comes from a room-by-room heat-loss calculation, not the size of your old furnace. An oversized unit cycles more and costs more; an undersized one leans on backup heat.
Plan the backup
Decide with your installer whether you keep a furnace as backup (a hybrid system) or go fully electric. The choice can change which rebate tier you qualify for.
