FAQ · Energy assessments

Do I need an energy audit to get a rebate?

An EnerGuide evaluation costs money and adds weeks. Here is which programs skip it, which require it, and when it's worth doing anyway.

Short answer

Not always. 14 of the 28 provincial and utility heat pump programs we track pay without an energy assessment, and the National Heat Pump Rebate won't need one. Programs that pay for insulation, windows and several upgrades together usually start with an EnerGuide evaluation.

What an energy audit is, and what it costs

An energy audit here means an EnerGuide evaluation by a registered energy advisor: a visit before the work and, for most programs, another after. See what an EnerGuide evaluation is and what it costs. Some programs refund part of the fee, such as the $600 Home Renovation Savings pays on its assessment track.

Programs that pay without one

When an assessment is worth doing anyway

When you plan several upgrades. Assessment tracks often pay for insulation, windows and air sealing that single-upgrade tracks don't, and the report tells you which upgrade saves the most. In Ontario, compare the two tracks in the Home Renovation Savings guide.

Frequently asked questions

Not for the single-upgrade heat pump rebate from Home Renovation Savings. You need one for its assessment track, which covers insulation, windows, air sealing and more.

No. As announced, no energy audit is needed before or after installation, but the heat pump must be on the federal Eligible Products List.
