How it works
Dual energy keeps your natural gas system as backup and lets an electric heat pump do most of the heating. Gas takes over only below about -12°C or -15°C, depending on the region. Énergir, Hydro-Québec and the Government of Québec fund grants for homes that switch to Hydro-Québec's dual-energy Rate DT (or a participating municipal or co-op dual-energy rate).
For a gas furnace (forced air), the grant for adding an electric heat pump is up to $7,300 for a single-family home or condo. For a gas boiler (hot water), adding an electric boiler and an electrical upgrade can bring up to $11,900 for a single-family home or condo: up to $4,100 for the boiler and up to $7,800 for the electrical upgrade, which must increase the home's amperage. Duplexes and triplexes get higher amounts. Amounts depend on the size of the equipment and the work needed, and grants cannot exceed 80% of the eligible extra cost; required electrical work can be counted in that cost. With an Énergir Partner contractor, the grant is usually taken off the price of the work.
Who qualifies
- Home connected to Énergir's natural gas network and heated by natural gas (or renewable natural gas) for at least 12 months before you apply.
- Central forced-air or hot-water natural gas heating. Homes already heated only by electricity, or already on a dual-energy rate, do not qualify.
- You become a new subscriber to Hydro-Québec's Rate DT (or a participating municipal or co-op dual-energy rate) and stay on it for at least 10 years.
- Work done by contractors registered in Québec with the required RBQ licences.
How to apply
Step 1: Check eligibility and take the quiz in Énergir's Customer Space, or contact Énergir.
Step 2: Sign a contract with an Énergir sales representative or Énergir Partner before installation starts.
Step 3: Have the work done, then submit the application no later than 12 months after the work is finished.
