How it works

This BC Hydro program covers individual suites in multi-unit buildings, which the Home Renovation Rebate Program excludes. It only funds electric-to-electric upgrades: replacing hard-wired electric heat with a cold-climate heat pump, or an electric water heater with a heat pump water heater.

A single-head ductless mini-split earns $1,000, and a ductless multi-split earns $750 per indoor head for up to three heads ($2,250). A heat pump water heater earns $1,000. One heat pump rebate and one water heater rebate are allowed per suite.

You must get a pre-approval code from BC Hydro before buying or installing anything, and strata or co-op approval is required. Heat pumps must be installed by a Home Performance Contractor Network member. Suite owners and owners of purpose-built rental buildings can apply; renters currently cannot.

Who qualifies

  • Suite in a purpose-built rental, strata condominium or equity co-op: low- or high-rise apartment, stacked townhome, or multiplex with six or more units; at least 12 months old
  • Year-round primary residence with a residential BC Hydro or City of New Westminster electricity account
  • Suite primarily heated by hard-wired electric heat
  • Heat pump must be a NEEP cold-climate model on the qualified product list, installed by an HPCN member
  • Strata council or co-op board approval; renters are not currently eligible
  • No income test; cannot be combined with the CleanBC Energy Savings Program condo rebate or other CleanBC, BC Hydro or FortisBC incentives for the same upgrade

How to apply

  1. Step 1: Get quotes and strata or co-op approval

  2. Step 2: Request a pre-approval code online from BC Hydro before buying or installing equipment (codes are valid for six months)

  3. Step 3: Complete the installation, pay the invoice in full and submit the rebate application within six months of the invoice date
