Before you get heat pump quotes in Alberta
Each program’s own rules come first.
- Ask for a cold-climate model
- Most Canadian rebates require a cold-climate air-source heat pump on NRCan's qualified product list. Ask each installer for the exact outdoor and indoor model numbers so you can check them.
- Insist on a heat-loss calculation
- Proper sizing comes from a room-by-room heat-loss calculation, not the size of your old furnace. An oversized unit cycles more and costs more; an undersized one leans on backup heat.
- Get pre-approval or an assessment first
- Some programs require pre-approval, a registered contractor or an energy assessment before any work starts. Doing things out of order is the most common reason rebates are refused.
- Plan the backup
- Decide with your installer whether you keep a furnace as backup (a hybrid system) or go fully electric. The choice can change which rebate tier you qualify for.
