How it works

Efficiency Nova Scotia launched this program in late 2024 as a pilot in two communities with deep African Nova Scotian roots: Preston Township (North Preston, East Preston, Cherry Brook and Lake Loon) and the Guysborough area (Sunnyville, Lincolnville, Upper Big Tracadie, Monastery and Mulgrave).

Eligible homeowners above the income limits may still receive a free home energy assessment, expert advice and installation of energy-efficient products. Households within the low- to moderate-income limits can also get insulation and weatherproofing, a switch from oil heating to a heat pump and other upgrades. The program is typically free for eligible participants, although some costs may apply for certain upgrades and income levels.

In 2026 the program received extra federal and provincial money under the Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program; eligibility rules did not change.
