Heat pump rebate scams: how to spot them in Canada

Every new rebate announcement brings door-knockers and callers who say they're “with the government program”. Here is how to tell the real thing from a sales pitch or a scam.

Short answer

Real programs don't sign you up at your door or by an unexpected phone call, and none charges a fee to apply. Hydro-Québec says it doesn't sell LogisVert by phone or door to door, and Save on Energy and Enbridge say the same about their programs. Apply on the official site, and check your installer on the program's own list.

Warning signs

  • A visitor or caller says they are "from the government rebate program" or "with your utility".
  • Pressure to sign today, or a price that is only good for this visit.
  • A promise of a "free" heat pump without any income check or official application.
  • A request for your SIN, banking details or utility account number before any paperwork from the program itself.
  • Claims that a closed program, such as the Canada Greener Homes Grant, is still paying.
  • A long rental or financing contract presented as a rebate.

How to check an offer in five minutes

  1. Find the program on our list of every program and open its official site from there.
  2. Check that the program is open: closed and upcoming programs are labelled.
  3. Look the installer up on the program's own contractor list. See do I need a registered contractor.
  4. Ask for a written quote with the equipment model numbers and the program name and amount.
  5. Ask who receives the rebate: see contractor or homeowner.

If you were targeted

Report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, and tell the program administrator, whose contact details are on each program page. If you signed a contract at your door, check your province's consumer protection rules on cancelling door-to-door contracts.
