How it works
Hilo is Hydro-Québec's smart-home subsidiary. Customers who sign up for the dynamic Rate Flex D can get Hilo smart thermostats and the Hilo hub for $0, with installation included. Those who already own compatible thermostats or water heater controllers from Honeywell Home, Mysa or Sinopé can instead earn a bonus of up to $210 per connected device, up to 10 line-voltage thermostats, 2 low-voltage thermostats and 2 water heater controllers per address.
Under Rate Flex D, electricity is cheaper than the base rate for most of the winter (December 1 to March 31) but costs more during peak events: at most 30 per winter, 4 hours each, between 6 and 10 a.m. or 4 and 8 p.m. Hilo automatically lowers heating during those events. Hydro-Québec guarantees that new Flex D customers won't pay more than the base rate over their first full winter, and says customers can save up to 20% on winter bills.
The device credit and bonus are tied to a 12-month commitment. If you leave Hilo, or override automation during 10 or more peak events in the first 12 months, you must repay the remaining credit and a declining share of the bonus.
Who qualifies
- Hydro-Québec residential customer on Rate Flex D (or Rate D with the Winter Credit Option if enrolled before August 8, 2025), not on an off-grid system
- Owners and tenants can join, as long as they hold the electricity contract
- Single-family, semi-detached or row house, or a unit in a building of 2 or more units, with a Hydro-Québec communicating meter
- High-speed internet with Wi-Fi covering the connected devices, and a smartphone for the Hilo app
- Heating control requires electric heaters with a compatible connected thermostat
How to apply
Step 1: Check your eligibility and order devices on the Hilo website (hiloenergie.com), or sign up for Rate Flex D in your Hydro-Québec Customer Space.
Step 2: Book the installation, connect your devices in the Hilo app, and choose how strongly Hilo should reduce heating during peak events.
