How it works

The City of Gatineau pays a subsidy to owners who remove an oil-fired central heating system and replace it with heating that runs only on electricity. The subsidy is 75% of the total cost of the work, up to $3,500 per eligible building, paid in a single payment once the work is done.

The building must be fully residential with no more than 20 dwellings, in the Aylmer, Hull, Gatineau, Buckingham or Masson-Angers sector. The oil system must be a forced-air or hot-water system that heats at least one dwelling. Dual-energy (oil and electric) systems and supplementary oil heaters do not qualify. A general contractor licensed by the Régie du bâtiment du Québec must dismantle the old system, remove and properly dispose of the tank, and install the new electric system.

Work that has received a subsidy from another program for the same work is not eligible. Registration is open at any time. The city places eligible buildings on its list and calls owners when their turn comes, until the budget runs out.

Who qualifies

  • Fully residential building of up to 20 dwellings in Gatineau (Aylmer, Hull, Gatineau, Buckingham or Masson-Angers sector).
  • The oil system is forced-air or hot-water, heats at least one dwelling, and is not dual-energy or a supplementary heater.
  • Buildings in a high-risk (0–20 year) flood zone or special intervention zone qualify only if flood-proofed.
  • Work done by a general contractor with an RBQ licence, including full dismantling and tank removal, and installation of a heating system that runs only on electricity.
  • The same work must not have received a subsidy from another program.

How to apply

  1. Step 1: Check that your property is in an eligible sector, then fill in the online registration form on the city's program page.

  2. Step 2: Get a detailed quote from an RBQ-licensed general contractor showing dismantling and tank removal costs, the new electric system's specifications, and the total cost.

  3. Step 3: Gather your last oil invoice or annual statement and a recent electricity bill with the consumption history. Check whether a building permit is needed.

  4. Step 4: Wait for the city to call you to open your file, then complete the work. The subsidy is paid in one payment after the work is done.
