How it works
Saint John Energy, the City of Saint John's own electric utility, rents ductless mini-split heat pumps through its Zero30 program. You book a free 30 to 40 minute home assessment, and the utility installs the unit through its partner Greenfoot Energy Solutions. The monthly rental covers standard installation, periodic inspection, service calls and replacement. Saint John Energy keeps ownership of the unit, and there is no buyout option.
Rates for Saint John Energy customers start at $55.36 a month for a 9,000 BTU wall unit, $55.93 for 12,000 BTU and $56.50 for 15,000 BTU, with floor models and a 24,000 BTU unit costing more. Households outside Saint John Energy's territory can also rent, at higher rates starting at $66.66 a month, and must pay by pre-authorized payment. For a limited time, refurbished units are offered at $10 a month off the regular price. Rental rates rose 2.0% on September 1, 2026.
If you would rather own the equipment, Saint John Energy says customers with a good payment history and credit score can buy a heat pump from the vendor of their choice and have the utility finance it, up to $10,000 over seven years. The rental models carried by the program (Panasonic, Fujitsu and LG) qualify for NB Power's Total Home Energy Savings Program rebates.
Who qualifies
- The rental agreement is signed by the registered owner of the home. Businesses can also rent.
- The heat pump cannot be the only heat source where it is installed. You must keep a working primary heating system.
- Saint John Energy can refuse a rental if the site is unsafe or impractical or if your payment history with the utility is unacceptable.
- Financing is for customers with a good payment history with Saint John Energy and a good credit score.
How to apply
Step 1: Book a free home assessment on Saint John Energy's heat pump rental page.
Step 2: Review the rental agreement. If you live outside Saint John, also complete the pre-authorized payment agreement.
Step 3: Greenfoot Energy Solutions installs the unit, and the rental appears on your monthly bill.
Step 4: To finance a heat pump you buy yourself instead, call Saint John Energy at (506) 658-5252 or 1-877-907-5550.
