How it works
Under the Affordable Home Energy Program's homeowner offer, Efficiency Manitoba covers the upfront cost of a ground source heat pump and pays the contractor directly. The homeowner repays $75 a month, interest-free, for 15 years ($13,500 in total) on the Manitoba Hydro energy bill.
Retrofit projects costing more than $38,000, and replacements of an existing ground source system costing more than $18,500, need an upfront contribution from the homeowner, as can any related upgrades the home needs. The repayment becomes due in full if the home is sold or changes ownership; it does not transfer to the buyer.
Retrofits must replace an electric furnace or boiler, electric baseboards or natural gas heating; homes converting from fuel oil also qualify for incentives. New homes and replacement ground source systems are eligible. Income-qualified households can get a ground source heat pump free through the Energy Efficiency Assistance Program.
Who qualifies
- Manitoba homeowner installing in a primary (not seasonal) residence; new homes are eligible
- Retrofit replaces electric furnace/boiler, electric baseboards or natural gas heating; fuel oil conversions also qualify
- Replacements of existing ground source systems are eligible
- Installed by an Efficiency Manitoba registered contractor (members of the Manitoba Geothermal Energy Alliance)
How to apply
Step 1: Choose a registered ground source contractor, who applies on your behalf
Step 2: Wait for Efficiency Manitoba's approval email before any work starts; you then have one year to install
Step 3: Sign the completion declaration with your contractor; Efficiency Manitoba pays the contractor
Step 4: The $75 monthly payment is added to your Manitoba Hydro energy bill
