How it works
HAT Smart, the City of Medicine Hat's conservation program, refunds part of the cost of an EnerGuide home evaluation on an existing home. The pre-renovation evaluation tells you which upgrades are worth doing, and the post-renovation evaluation confirms the savings. For 2026, each one can earn a rebate of up to $250, and the post-renovation rebate is new this year.
The evaluation must be done between January 1 and December 15, 2026, by an NRCan-registered energy advisor who holds a City of Medicine Hat business licence, and it must carry the HATSmart or CEIP program code. The same evaluation reports are needed if you later use the HAT Smart Existing Homes rebate or Clean Energy Improvement Program financing.
Rebates are handled first come, first served until the year's funding runs out, and they are credited to the utility account for the home.
Who qualifies
- The home is an existing home in Medicine Hat and you receive a City of Medicine Hat utility statement for it (electricity, natural gas and/or water).
- The evaluation is completed between January 1 and December 15, 2026, under EnerGuide Rating System v.15.
- The energy advisor is NRCan-registered and holds a current City of Medicine Hat business licence.
- The evaluation carries the HATSmart or CEIP program identifier, and the advisor's paid receipt shows that code and their City business licence number.
- Your City accounts must be in good standing. Condominiums are not eligible for HAT Smart residential rebates.
How to apply
Step 1: Book an EnerGuide evaluation with a licensed advisor from the NRCan service organization list and ask for the HATSmart or CEIP identifier.
Step 2: Pay the advisor directly and keep the paid receipt.
Step 3: Submit the 2026 EnerGuide Evaluations rebate form online with your evaluation documents by December 15, 2026.
Step 4: Allow about four weeks for the credit to appear on your utility account.
