How it works

FortisBC pays insulation rebates to customers whose homes are heated mainly by FortisBC natural gas or by FortisBC or participating municipal electricity. It is one of the few retrofit rebates in B.C. open to gas-heated homes regardless of income.

The rebate is based on the area insulated and the R-value added, with a cap for each area: $900 for attics, $1,200 each for exterior wall cavities, exterior wall sheathing and basement or crawlspace walls, and $1,000 for exposed floors, floors over crawlspaces and headers. Insulating two or more areas that each earn at least $500 adds a $300 bonus.

Work must be done by a Home Performance Contractor Network member, and the application is due within six months of the paid invoice.

Who qualifies

  • Residential FortisBC natural gas account and/or FortisBC or participating municipal electricity account (Grand Forks, Penticton, Summerland or Nelson Hydro)
  • Home primarily heated by FortisBC natural gas or by FortisBC or participating municipal electricity
  • Year-round primary residence at least 12 months old: single-family, duplex, triplex, row home, townhouse or mobile home on a permanent foundation; new construction, additions and garages excluded
  • HPCN contractor installation; self-installs not eligible
  • Pest infestations must be fixed before the rebate is paid; owners of rentals need consent from the account holder

How to apply

  1. Step 1: Hire an HPCN contractor and confirm the R-value you will add

  2. Step 2: Complete the work and pay the invoice

  3. Step 3: Apply online through FortisBC within six months of the paid invoice date (processing takes up to 90 days)
