What you can get

What Banff Solar Incentive Program pays for each upgrade
UpgradeUp to
Rooftop solar PV system (2 kW minimum)$450 per kW, up to 20 kWOne application per property.$9,000

How it works

Banff's solar incentive is a one-time rebate paid after your solar PV system is installed and connected. The Town pays $450 for every kilowatt of capacity, on systems of at least 2 kW, up to 20 kW. That works out to a maximum of $9,000 per property.

Systems need Town development and building permits (the permit fees are waived), must follow the Town's solar panel design guidelines, and need a micro-generation agreement with FortisAlberta. Recipients agree to let the Town share their project's story and data. The Town takes applications at any time.

If you combine solar with other upgrades, the Deep Retrofit Program may pay more.

Who qualifies

  • Residential or commercial property in Banff. One application per property.
  • System is at least 2 kW and meets development, building and electrical codes, with CSA- or ULC-approved equipment.
  • You have a micro-generation agreement with FortisAlberta.
  • Panels follow the Town's Solar Panel Design Guidelines.
  • You agree to share your installation's story and data publicly.

How to apply

  1. Step 1: Get a site assessment and quote from a solar installer.

  2. Step 2: Your installer helps get the development, building, electrical and micro-generation approvals, then installs and connects the system.

  3. Step 3: Send the micro-generation and interconnection agreements, the inspection certificate and an itemized invoice to the Town's Planning department (403-762-1215).

  4. Step 4: The Town mails a rebate cheque.
