How it works

Housing NWT helps seniors stay in their homes with a forgivable loan of up to $15,000 over one year. It covers upgrades that make a home more efficient and cheaper to heat, power and supply with water, as well as minor adaptations such as grab bars. More than one unrelated repair can be approved in a year as long as the total stays within $15,000.

One homeowner must be 60 or older, and household income must be within the monthly income threshold for your community. Households earning more than $59,999 pay 10% of the repair cost before work begins.

Applications for 2026 are accepted from April 1 to October 31, 2026, and successful applicants are told within 60 days after the intake closes. You can apply to this program and to the Seniors Home Repair program, which offers a forgivable loan of up to $50,000 for larger health and safety repairs.
